Dental Sleep Medicine Specialist

Dental sleep medicine specialists use oral appliance therapy to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Oral appliances look like sports mouth guards. These devices move the lower jaw and tongue forward to improve airflow during sleep. The dentist makes and adjusts the oral appliance to give the patient a personal fit. Dentists work closely with sleep specialists to ensure that the treatment is effective. Some dentists specialize in oral and maxillofacial surgery. They may perform surgery to treat OSA. Methods include tonsil removal and jaw surgery.
